RESEARCH & DATA

Understand your analysis well enough to explain it

Work through what was done, why it was done, what the results mean and where the evidence ends. Prepare to discuss the statistical part of your research with understanding.

When this helps

You are reviewing statistical output, preparing a presentation or research defence, responding to supervisor questions or checking how to report results accurately.

THE DETAIL THAT MATTERS

What can you actually conclude?

A small p-value does not tell you how large or important an effect is. A non-significant result does not, by itself, establish that no effect exists. We connect estimates and uncertainty to the design, sample and question.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE / ESTIMATE & UNCERTAINTY

A difference of four points, with uncertainty.

Suppose the estimated difference between two group means is 4 points, with a 95% confidence interval from −1 to 9 points.

Estimate
The observed difference is positive, but the interval includes zero and values in both directions.
Interpretation
The data do not establish a difference at the corresponding two-sided 5% significance level. That does not demonstrate equivalence or prove there is no difference.
Context
Whether four points matters depends on the scale and setting. The study design determines which wider conclusions are justified.

What the work involves

01

Reconstruct the analysis

Review the question, method and settings behind each output. Where tables alone are insufficient, agree which supporting files are needed.

02

Read the evidence

Explain estimates, confidence intervals, effect sizes and statistical tests in the context of your study.

03

Discuss the boundaries

Separate association from causal claims and consider sampling, measurement and design limitations.

04

Practise explaining the work

Use an agreed results consultation to ask questions and talk through the statistical reasoning in your own words.

What you receive

Deliverables are agreed in your quote.

  • Annotated outputs or technical interpretation notes.
  • Guidance on reporting the agreed statistical results.
  • A discussion of the findings and limitations.
  • A list of questions or checks needed before drawing stronger conclusions.

What to prepare for an enquiry

Share your research question, stage, data type and deadline. No test selection is needed.

Please leave out sensitive records. File sharing is agreed after the initial review.

QUESTIONS

Questions about this service

Can you explain analysis completed elsewhere?

Yes. We first assess the available output and documentation. Checking whether the analysis is appropriate may also require the syntax and de-identified data.

Will you write my results chapter?

We provide technical explanations and reporting guidance. You remain responsible for your research argument, writing and submission under your institution’s rules.

Can this help with a research defence?

A consultation can help you understand and discuss the statistical work. It does not guarantee approval, marks or a particular academic outcome.

What if an analysis needs to be corrected?

We explain the concern and agree any additional work before rerunning it. Interpretation cannot resolve a problem in the underlying design or analysis by itself.
